Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of various sugar substitutes as sorbitol, xylitol and erythritol in chewing-gums on remineralization of initial enamel caries lesions on bovine teeth in situ models. With a view to evaluate the remineralization effect of sugar, sorbitol, xylitol & erythritol sweetened chewing gums in vivo, enamel slabs taken from artificial carious lesion produced by hydroxy-ethylcellulose system were mounted in acrylic mandibular removable appliances. 24 volunteers divided with 4 groups were participated sequently for 11 weeks, per 2weeks¢¥ experiment and a week wash-out periods interval. Each group was indicated to use the chewing gums for 10 minutes, 5 times everyday.
After the clinical experiments, cross-sectional microhardness value and carious lesion depth were measured.
Following results were obtained ;
1. The microhardness values were increased in sugar-substituted containing chewing gum group(group III, IV,V) than sugar containing group and control group(group I, II)(p(0.05). But between group I and II , no significant difference were found(p) 0. 05).
2. Marked remineralization of carious lesion in sorbitol, xylitol & erythritol group was shown but carious finding of sugar group was similar to original carious enamel lesion.
3. Under polarizing light microscope, carious lesion depth were decrease in sugar-substituted containing chewing gum group than sugar and control group (p (0.05).
